God Cannot Die
It is not possible for God to die. The Word of God, the second person of the Blessed Trinity, was not able to die. He had to take from us our mortal flesh. This is the only way he was able to die. This was the only way he could give us eternal life.
Of ourselves we had no power to live, nor did He have the power to die.
St. Augustine reflects that He affected a wonderful exchange with us, through mutual sharing. We gave Him the power to die; He will give us the power to live.
He died for us on the Cross. We died with Him in our Baptism. He opened Heaven for us by rising from the dead. He defeated Death for ever and stole from death its eternal power. Death died on the Cross.
He promised us Eternal Life. He rose from the dead. We will also rise with Him. Alleluia! He is Risen!
